Responsibilities

The incumbent will serve as a fully qualified staff psychiatrist at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) providing recovery-oriented care to Veterans who present to the emergency room for acute management of their psychiatric symptoms. At the Houston VA, the mental health team is embedded in the emergency room and collaborates in a consultant role with the medical providers. The incumbent will be aligned under the Mental Health Care line and will work full-time in the emergency room as a staff psychiatrist. The Houston VA is working towards building a team of dedicated staff psychiatrists who can provider 24 hour, 7-day a week coverage for the emergency room. Options for full and part-time are available. Shifts that are available include weekend days as well as late afternoon/evenings on Mondays and Fridays. Shift lengths will vary from 8-12 hours depending on the day. The staff psychiatrist will work in collaboration with the other mental health clinicians in the ER that include mental health social workers, physician assistants and trainees of multiple disciplines.

Work Schedule: Variable tours of 8 - 12 hours including both evenings and weekends.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of a first-year residency or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
