Job Summary

Performs skilled work under occasional supervision, operates an approved Ground Ambulance or EMS Non-Transporting Vehicle (Quick Response Vehicle-QRV), rescues victims and performs advanced emergency care including the administration of life sustaining treatment to patients on-site and while en-route to the hospital. Responds to the scene of emergency and non-emergency calls, applies necessary medical treatment and transports sick or injured persons. Creates patient care and operational reports, communicates with physicians, nurses, and other medical and emergency services personnel, and maintains ambulances, equipment and quarters.

Essential Functions

  • Responds to requests for service, performs necessary medical care and procedures in accordance with state regulations and local established protocols for Basic and Advanced Life Support.

  • Coordinates on scene activities of EMS personnel and first responders.

  • Operates EMS vehicles and equipment in a safe manner.

  • Operates departmental communication equipment to communicate with dispatchers, physicians, nurses and other emergency service personnel.

  • Prepares detailed medical, operational, and incident reports.

  • Maintains vehicles, equipment, and supplies in a state of readiness in accordance with established guidelines.

  • Keeps owned and leased facilities and grounds clean and professional in appearance.

  • Participates in required employee meetings for educational and operational purposes.

  • Participates in EMS community education and community relations activities to promote a positive image of EMS and the profession.

  • Studies street and road patterns and networks of the County geography so that requests for service may be made without difficulty or delay.

  • Performs other related duties or task as assigned by leadership staff to maintain the department in a continual state of readiness and present a professional appearance.

Physical Requirements

Must be physically able to operate a variety of vehicles, machinery and equipment as required to meet the essential job functions of a paramedic. Must be able to exert up to 200 pounds of force occasionally, and or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects and or people. Requires the ability to coordinate eyes and hands at a normal speed and accurately in using medical equipment. Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as emergency medical equipment. Must have minimal eye/hand/foot coordination. Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color. Requires the ability to talk, hear and communicate by phone.

Education, Experience and Certifications

High School Diploma or GED required. Successful completion of an EMT-Paramedic training program required. Current NC EMT-P certification required. National registry preferred. Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS HCP) from AHA required. ACLS, PALS/PEPP and PHTLS required; instructor experience preferred. Certification by the NCMB as an EMT-P and active driver's license required. National Registry preferred. 3 years fulltime, active field (or equivalent) in EMS experience preferred. Critical care transport experience preferred.
