Registered dietitians RDs work collaboratively to make nutrition, hydration, and feeding recommendations. RDs assess patients nutritional needs, offer nutritional counseling, and provide meals that reduce medical complications and other side effects of medication and treatment. People will generally eat more if they can eat familiar favorites and those they regard as comfort foods. RDs also help educate patients and their families about end of life care choices. RDs may find that they need to answer the same question many times. The complexity of the issue demands that topics be approached and sorted through from multiple perspectives, always assuring that consistent answers are provided so that patients and their families feel secure in making sensitive end of life food and fluid decisions. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Establish and maintain standards of food production, service, sanitation, safety and security in compliance with the Medicare Conditions of Participation COP requirements, government regulations, and Access- Company Hospice policies. * Manage usage of resources labor, materials, and supplies to ensure the agency s financial goals are met. * Develop and-or review nutrition educational materials for patients and staff. * Provide nutrition counseling and education to patients, families-caregivers and staff. * Serve as a resource for hospice staff for questions related to nutrition, diet, meal planning, etc. * Consult with physicians and nurses as part of the care team. * Be available via telephone and-or electronic mail for consults or questions. * Maintain absolute confidentiality of all information pertaining to patients, families, and staff. * Responsible for maintenance of electronic medical records, assuring accuracy, completeness and compliance with regulations, certification standards, legal and ethical standards. * Support, instruct and educate the patient, family, and caregiver. * Maintain the dignity of the dying patient. * Support the patients and family's unique spiritual and cultural beliefs. * Provide holistic, family-centered care across treatment settings to improve the quality of life. * Consult and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team and others involved in the patients care. * Provide care consistent with National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization standards of practice for hospice programs. QUALIFICATIONS-SKILLSETS: * Registered Dietitian through the Commission on Dietetic Registration CDR * Idaho Licensure through the Idaho Board of Medicine and the Dietetic Licensure Board * Minimum 2 years of experience in food service or clinical nutrition area in healthcare facility * Experience with menu planning for patients in a hospice setting * Knowledge of patient nutrition-education techniques for terminally ill patients * Strong interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills
