Incumbents are considered competent paraprofessionals, who perform work under guidance within a framework of defined procedures, policies and standards.

Provides direct care services to clients; teach and assist clients in performing daily living functions; implement and execute behavioral programs; attend treatment meeting; accompany clients to appointments; provide medication support and assist in medication administration as required by the program; documentation as required; assist clients in developing individual therapeutic goals and objectives; assist in planning and organizing recreational, social, instructional or special activities; uses motivational skills to encourage participation in activities; requisition supplies and equipment; enforces rules and regulations. Required to participate in restraint and seclusion as directed by nursing/psychiatry staff and per DMH regulations and works as part of a team providing support to the program to ensure environment is secure by monitoring clients and assigned areas as well as ensuring the safety of clients and staff.

Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Treats all clients with dignity and respect through interactions which affirm the individual’s needs and preferences by optimally integrating the client’s perspective into all facets of care; will advocate for clients,

  2. Facilitates timely resolution of client concerns and assist clients in the exercise of their rights.

  3. Works with clients on an individual or small group basis through therapeutic interventions;

  4. Provides a safe milieu for all clients by monitoring client activity to promote optimal stabilization and rehabilitation.

  5. Works with clients to develop individual therapeutic goals and objectives, through consultation, evaluation, review of client history or observation.

  6. Plans and organizes recreational, social, instructional or special activities, in consultation with other administrative or clinical staff.

  7. Evaluates recreation area/space to determine appropriateness of activities.

  8. Ensure compliance with Federal Regulations, 42 CFR Part 2, Confidentiality of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Clients and HIPAA Regulations

  9. Uses motivational skills to encourage client participation in activities.

  10. Conducts training with staff and or clients addressing services available and providing instructions on participation in sporting events, crafts, arts, or other activities.

  11. Requisitions supplies and equipment as needed.

  12. Maintains attendance records.

  13. Documents progress and incident data in the client’s medical record.

  14. Prepares logs or reports as requested to document reported incidents

  15. Participates in treatment planning meetings as requested.

  16. Assists clients to develop individual relaxation, body awareness, or exercise/activity plans.

  17. Provides/assists clients as needed with activities of daily living (ADL) and rehabilitates aspects of care to help ensure the health, comfort and safety needs of clients are being met.

  18. Establishes rapport with clients and with other staff by developing a good, cooperative working relationship to aid in improved client care.

  19. Communicates clients’ progress or regress by verbally reporting to the supervisor or designee, participating in client’s treatment plan and nursing care plan meetings to ensure continuance of client care.

  20. Documents observations of client care. Documents observations in clients’ records as directed to provide written follow-through of verbal reports.

  21. Supervises and/or assists clients in their performance of general housekeeping duties in assigned area to ensure a clean, safe, therapeutic environment.

  22. Performs clerical duties, such as filing, making out requisitions and collecting data in order to maintain complete accurate records to help expedite services.

  23. Participates in continuing education/in-service programs to upgrade skills and knowledge, and competency.

  24. Participates in admission, transfer and discharge process by collecting and recording appropriate information and providing physical and emotional support to the client.

  25. Orients new clients to the unit and provides the client with a review of available resources and their ability to access these resources.

  26. Organize, plan, direct and implement daily unit routine as directed.

  27. Takes an active role managing daily problems and interventions. Mediates issues among clients and attend meetings to report unit and client activity and/or issues, to assist in decision making.

  28. Conducts group meetings with clients to discuss activities and or concerns.

  29. Communicates and implements policies and changes as directed.

  30. Communicates maintenance and/or living environment issue to appropriate departments or persons.

  31. Coordinates and oversees the activities and programs of an assigned program, service or division to ensure effective operations, proper care and treatment of clients and to ensure compliance with governing laws, rules, regulations and established standards.

  32. Confers with agency staff to exchange information and resolve problems and/or issues.

  33. Provides a safe unit environment by accurately performing client safety checks; accurately signing patients on and off the unit; and observing and monitoring assigned areas

  34. Will escort visitors to and from Unit areas.

  35. Will be required to conduct searches in accordance to Program and DMH Policy.

  36. Will be required to assist in the evacuation of clients in emergency situation.

  37. Accompanies patients to various appointments, programs, and treatment areas and assists professional or medical staff as needed. Will transport clients, as needed, to appointments, programs and treatment areas.

  38. Responds to WRAP clients off unit behavioral emergencies as assigned.

  39. Demonstrates knowledge of techniques related to the use of restraint and seclusion; including restraint and seclusion reduction principles comprising skills related to prevention, de-escalation, and debriefing.

  40. Demonstrates responsibility regarding punctuality and attendance to assure staff is available to provide patient care.

  41. Carries out other related duties as assigned.

*The Department of Mental Health (DMH) in collaboration with the Department of Public Health (DPH) Bureau of Substance Abuse Services operates a statewide Women’s Recovery from Addiction Program in Taunton for individuals civilly committed by the courts for substance use treatment for up to 90 days (“Section 35 commitment”).

The program model will provide acute detoxification and early clinical stabilization services as we help clients develop community-based linkages to outpatient supports and substance use disorder treatment providers. The individuals treated within this program will be linked upon discharge to a range of services within the DPH continuum of care for substance use conditions.

The Department of Mental Health is seeking qualified candidates for the newly created Women’s Recovery from Addiction Program for women admitted under MGL Chapter 123, Section 35. This program provides administrative, medical, clinical and non-clinical services. This program will provide quality client-centered care and recovery oriented treatment.*

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have (A) at least two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience providing direct care services in a human service related field (e.g. substance use disorders, mental health, or developmental or physical disability), of which (B) at least one (1) year must be specifically working with a substance use disorder population; or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitution below.

Substitutions:

I. An Associate's degree or higher with a major in substance use disorder, psychology, human services, or mental health may be substituted for one year of the required (A) experience.
