Responsible and accountable for performing a wide range of direct patient care tasks. The performance of tasks allows the care team to provide quality care. Meets the qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range on their assigned clinical area.

Functions under the delegation of the Registered Nurse (RN). Directly reports to the Operations Manager.

Responsible for ensuring the very best patient/family experience by optimizing all customer interactions. Fosters a positive work environment through mutual support and cooperation and adheres to GHS and unit specific Service Standards.

Performs duties to provide the highest level of quality that will maximize patient satisfaction in accordance with the goals and objectives of the Geisinger Health System.


*1. Meets and follows the Division’s and Organization’s established Service Standards and adheres to the Code of Conduct. Complies with all hospital policies and procedures.

*2. Maintains all hospital and unit specific patient safety education programs, competencies, GOALS, and employee health requirements in a timely manner.

*3. Provides patient care as directed by the licensed nurse in meeting the multidisciplinary plan of care established for each patient.

*4. Identifies, observes, and documents the physical needs of the patient according to established standards.

*5. Reports changes in patient condition to licensed personnel in a timely manner.

*6. Demonstrates knowledge of aseptic technique and safely performs clinical tasks.

*7. Obtains and maintains the integrity of specimens in accordance with policy, procedure, and physician order.

*8. Performs EKGs as assigned (after instruction and training) following accepted practices, policies, procedures, and physician order.

*9. Provides for or assists patients with activities of daily living (ADL’s) (i.e. bathing, oral hygiene, etc.) and fulfills designated and delegated responsibilities for ongoing continuum of care (non-assessment). Specific responsibilities are defined at the unit level utilizing the Nursing Assistant Activities Policy 4.202 as a guide.

*10. Initiates appropriate emergency interventions when change in patient condition warrants.

*11. Assists with transporting non-controlled medications to and from Pharmacy and within the unit as needed. Assists with transporting blood and blood products to and from Blood Bank as needed.

*12. Provides for a safe environment by taking corrective measures to maintain a neat, orderly work environment in optimal functioning order.

*13. Assists in problem solving and troubleshooting in the care and maintenance of equipment and assists in ensuring adequate supplies are available on the unit.

*14. Provides one to one patient safety watch as assigned following established policy and procedures.

*15. Actively participates as a team member in working towards the goals of the unit and organization.

  1. Completes clerical responsibilities for task completion based on ability and training.

*17. Serves as a preceptor and/or mentor for new staff and students in a positive manner.

*18. Supports and participates in initiatives that support the Magnet mission.

*19. Suggests issues for improvement and offers solutions to the issues.

*20. Performs duties as required or assigned by emergency or other operational reasons for which the employee is qualified to perform.

Demonstrates ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively by utilizing good communication skills, which include courteous, tactful, respectful and non-aggressive behavior.

Demonstrates basic math skills.

Demonstrates the ability to keep current with unit and organizational communication (i.e. reading emails, minutes, and bulletin boards and attending staff meetings and performance improvement activities).

Demonstrates basic computer skills, basic navigation in a Windows environment, and passwords and security. Accesses the InfoWeb and internet, uses basic browser functionality, and understands policy on Internet usage. Demonstrates the ability to compose, send, and read emails, understands email functionality and conventions related to replying.


High School diploma or equivalent required.

Successful completion of role orientation and competencies. Continuing in-services and education programs required.

BLS certification preferred.


Work is typically performed in a clinical environment.
