Work Schedule: Days 10:00am-6:30pm with flexibility per Department needs. Weekday, weekend and holiday call. Weekend and holiday rotation.

JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for providing care in an atmosphere sensitive to each person's physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs, with respect for the beliefs and values of co-workers, patients and their families. Functions in the spirit of teamwork and is accountable for the delivery of care utilizing those skills learned in both the clinical

and didactic arena. Assists surgeon with procedures related to the care of patient of all ages during surgical intervention.

Responsible for ensuring the very best patient/family experience by optimizing all customer interaction. Foster a positive work environment through mutual support and cooperation and adheres to GHS and unit specific Service Standards.

Accountable to the Registered Nurse and the Pod coordinator.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assists in the coordination of treatments with other disciplines. Provides basic patient assistance. Connects patients to clinical equipment as needed.

*2. Practices aseptic techniques while preparing for surgery including scrubbing, applying surgical gown, gloving, draping and setting up instrument table. Actively participates in surgical Time/out / OR Briefing according to the universal protocol.

*3. Identifies correct surgical site with the circulating RN/surgeon before incision of operative procedures.

*4. Maintains an accurate account of supplies including sponges, needles and instruments. Verifies count with the circulating nurse at end of procedure.

*5. Prepares, identifies and verifies all specimens obtained during the surgical procedure.

*6. Disposes of linens, needles and sharps in appropriate containers.

  1. Assesses wounds and applies or changes sterile dressing as instructed by the RN.

*8. Maintains and documents universal precautions. Initiates emergency procedures.

  1. Reports to the RN reactions, results of procedures and any changes observed in the patient's condition. Documents pertinent medical information where indicated.

  2. Participates in the admission and discharge process. Performs billing as appropriate for services rendered or equipment used.

*11. Establishes and maintains interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors and hospital personnel while assuring confidentiality of patient information.

*12. Identifies and communicates ethical concerns to appropriate personnel.

*13. Participates in on-call rotations of OR. Acts as a preceptor for students assigned to the surgical unit.

*14. Adheres to all policies, protocols and standards of care. Performs quality control monitoring (QA/QI/QE).

*15. Participates in JCAHO mandated educational programs. Maintains BCLS certification annually. Maintains Goals training annually.

*16. Performs additional duties including specimen collection, pleure-vac and traction set up, patient transport and post-mortem care.

  1. The Attending Surgeon may, at his or her discretion, if aware of and satisfied with the qualifications of the Staff Surgical Tech involved in the surgery, delegate to that Surgical Tech such additional medical or surgical services as may be appropriate under the circumstances of that surgery in order to further the goal of providing quality care to the patient. Such delegated services are to be performed under that Attending Surgeon's direct observation and supervision. The Staff Surgical Tech to whom the delegation is directed, shall immediately inform that Attending Surgeon if that Surgical Tech does not feel comfortable with such delegation or feels that he or she cannot perform those delegated services safely or competently.

*18. Assures all medications and solutions are labeled, under the RN's supervision.

  1. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

  2. Assists Pod Coordinator and Team Coordinator with efficiency and effectiveness to improve OR operations.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from an accredited school of ORT required. Knowledge and technical skills to operate, set up and maintain equipment in the care unit required.

Minimum three years previous operating experience preferred.

BLS certification preferred. Required within 60 days of employment

Minimum three months of on-the-job experience to become familiar with all job duties required.

Basic computer skills required.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work is typically performed in a clinical environment. Extensive periods of standing and walking are involved.
