The Surgical Technologist is responsible for planning and organizing supplies, instruments and equipment for surgical procedures. Promotes education of self, peers and students. Collaborates with all surgical team members to assure the safe and efficient passage of a patient through surgery. Responsible for his/her activities that can interact with, collaborate with, cause, or result in an effect or consequence to or with other practitioners in the surgical environment. In the clinic setting, assists in the delivery of primary health care of patient including maintenance of clerical record/documentation. Prepares a wide variety of patient care activities and coordinates services for medical staff. · Is involved in and responsible for a high degree of physician satisfaction. · Assists surgeon as scrub technologist according to prescribed standards. · Scrubs, dons gowns and gloves in accordance with performance standards. · Sets up table, instruments, and supplies and drapes operative field. · Assists and anticipates needs of the surgeon in providing instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies. · Maintains preparedness and readiness for emergencies. · Maintains and reports correct counts or discrepancies in counts of sponges, needles, and instruments with circulating nurse. · Maintains aseptic technique at all times as dictated by accepted standards. · Assists in maintenance, preparation, and care of specimens. · Assists in application of dressings, casts, and in moving of patients of all ages. · Assists in maintenance of instruments and supplies by proper cleaning, care, utilization, and sterilization. · Maintains awareness of safety hazards in use of equipment to prevent damage or harm to personnel and patients. · Cleans rooms, furniture, equipment, and suite according to prescribed procedures. · Performs skin closure per surgeon request only after successful completion of wound closure course and evidence of competency. · Handles equipment, supplies, and items correctly to ensure usability, readiness, and safety. · As a member of the specialty team, assists in inventory of supplies and equipment to assure availability and maintenance of par levels. · Knows where all supplies are kept and is able to get or put them away appropriately. · Takes call for emergency surgery. · Provides flexibility in the role of the surgical technologist to accommodate the diversity and variety of procedures. Requirements: · Knowledge of surgical standards and practices normally acquired through graduation from a surgical technologist program or related field and/or three or more years of related experience in the operating room. Graduate of a certified surgical technologist program, one year acute care surgical experience, and certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist beneficial. · Current CPR certification or obtained within 90 days of hire.
